All roads lead to Rome:
learning latin with web tools

Your situation (context)
I’ve been teaching Latin language for several
years, at secondary school. Usually, students enjoy cultural issues about
Roman culture but they have some problems with grammar contents and
translation.
Several authors argue that learning Latin is a
way of improving linguistic awareness and grammar skills. However, Latin
language is an optional subject in Portugal and is always seen as a useless
language.
However, students recognize how Latin is
important in a multicultural and multilingual context and as subject that
helps them how to learn.
|
Example
Latin language is not an attractive subject. In
Portuguese schools, usually, students don’t choose this language because it
is not a modern language and it is seen as a very difficult subject.
|
The
change you would like to see (challenge)
A student can use Latin to grasp the bones
and sinews of any language. So, I hope to increase students’ motivation and
consequently their attitude towards learning Latin.
|
Example
By using web 2.0 tools, I think it is
possible to try new approaches to Latin learning, more interactive. The web
is a very important repository of texts, films, pictures and grammar
resources, which could be very useful to learn this language in a different
way.
|
How you might go about bringing that change
With a different approach, based on constructivist
learning theories, it will be possible to change student’s ideas about Latin
language. Web 2.0 could put the student in the center of the class, by involving him in the learning process as content producer. Voki, Vocaroo, Prezi,
Mobile Study, Web Quests, Animoto, Glogster, blogs and wikispaces are
examples of web tools that could bring different ways of learning, in a
blended learning scenario.
|
Example
In a blended learning scenario, web 2.0 will
be used for grammar exercises and for reading skills. Some of these tools are
useful for multimedia presentations about cultural topics. Students will
produce some of their study materials, by using these tools, and share their knowledge
with their peers.
